China Alliance for Scientific Literacy launches "S&T supporting rural revitalization" program

With the aim to give full play to S&T in supporting rural revitalization, improve scientific literacy of the farmers and help cultivate sci-tech professionals in rural areas, the China Alliance for Scientific Literacy launched a special training program of "S&T supporting rural revitalization" on May 17, 2022.

 

The program was initiated with 4 training lectures delivered both online and on-spot.

 

The program was organized by the Children and Youth Science Center (CYSC) of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the China Association of Agricultural Science Society, the Chinese Medical Association, the China Association of Children's Science Instructors (CACSI) and the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE), and got special support from a special fund for scientific literacy under the Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology Museums in China.

 

Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the launching activity was conducted with Beijing as the main venue, and multiple sub-venues set up in 11 provinces including Ningxia, Shaanxi, Henan, Heilongjiang, Shanxi, Hainan, Xinjiang, Shandong, Guizhou, Sichuan and Jiangsu. Participants of sub-venues joined in the program online.

 

The launching ceremony and training lectures of the program were live streamed through media platforms of guangming.com, China Science Communication, the official website of the China Alliance for Scientific Literacy, and Innovland etc.

Li Enwei, lecturer of the “E-commerce leader training for rural revitalization” program of Meituan, one China’s most famous one-stop platforms helping people eat better and live better, Professor Yuan Yonggui, director of department of psychiatric and mental diseases of Zhongda Hospital Southeast University, Wang Yuan, senior researcher at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Wang Yuanzhuo, senior researcher at the Institute of Computing Technology  of the CAS, delivered training lectures on agricultural brand building, mental health construction during the COVID-19 pandemic and scientific topics arousing interests of teenagers.

 

From 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., more than 30,000 rural cadres, wealth leaders, rural medical workers, community residents and primary and secondary school students from 24 counties participated in the program on-spot, and nearly one million people viewed it online.

 

Special interactive sessions were included for the participants in sub-venues to communicate with the invited experts through video links for questions and problems faced at grass-roots levels, the atmosphere on-spot was warm and lively.

 

In addition, under the joint efforts of Jiangxi popular science lecturers’ team and departments of education in local areas, more than 20,000 students from more than 90 primary and secondary schools were organized to watch popular science lectures.

 

At the launching ceremony, the China Alliance for Scientific Literacy issued an advocacy letter appealing all social sectors to take actions to promote rural revitalization and empower the farmers with science and technology for a brand new countryside in the new era.
