The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) released 2022 major scientific problems and engineering and technical challenges at the closing ceremony of the 24th Annual Meeting on June 27, 2022, which consisted of 10 forefront science problems that are significant for guiding scientific advances, 10 engineering challenges that are critical for engineering innovation, and 10 technical challenges that play a leading role in industrial development.

The 2022 final list was announced by You Zheng, vice president of CAST, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).

28 national societies of CAST including the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) and the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences were awarded the plaque of "excellent recommender" at the releasing ceremony.

In 2022, the program of soliciting and publicizing major scientific problems, engineering and technical challenges focused on 10 domains of basic disciplines of mathematics, physics and chemistry, earth science, ecological environment, manufacturing technology, information technology, advanced materials, resources and energy, agricultural technology, life and health, and aerospace technology.

649 problems of forefront science and challenges facing development of cutting-edge engineering and technologies were recommended by 107 national societies, alliances or unions of societies, 8 leading enterprises and associations for science and technology in enterprises.

Leading enterprises such as the China Resources (Holdings) Co.,Ltd. and the Tencent Group took part in the activity for the first time.

30,000 plus front-line sci-tech professionals and strategic scientists participated in the recommendation session and gave their evaluation suggestions.

The final list was decided after the first round of online voting by sci-tech professionals, the second round of experts screening and the final review by an evaluation committee set up by CAST.

CAST initiated the program since 2018. For 5 consecutive years, CAST organized national societies, associations for science and technology in enterprises and other organizations to contact sci-tech organizations and experts both at home and abroad to solicit the problems and challenges of each year, and publicized the result at each year's Annual Meeting.

5-year efforts witnessed 2,772 problems and challenges being solicited, among which 160 items were screened and publicized, and 146 national societies and alliances or unions of societies have taken part in the activity.

The program is of great significance to stimulate Chinese sci-tech professionals’ enthusiasm in inquiring science and technology, and helps them to confront pressing problems and challenges that were in urgency to be solved.

CAST expects to provide further publicity, promotion and follow-up services to amplify the effects of the program and guide Chinese sci-tech professionals to make originality innovation to solve urgent problems to build China’s strength in science and technology.
