2022 China Japan ROK Forum on Women in Science held in Beijing

With the theme of "Women in science, together for a better future", the 2022 China Japan ROK Forum on Women in Science Forum was held at the China Hall of Science and Technology (CHST) on September 2, 2022.

Luo Hui, member of the leading Party members group of CAST and director of Department of International Affairs of CAST, presided over the panel session of the forum.

 

Fang Xin, fellow of The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS), honorary president of the Chinese Association for Science of Science and S&T Policy, and Professor of the School of Public Policy and Management of the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) presided over the opening ceremony and keynote speeches session.

 

Zhang Yuzhuo pointed out that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the ROK.

 

On this important occasion, the 2022 China Japan ROK Forum on Women in Science was held to demonstrate the wisdom and strength of female scientists in the three countries in creating a better future, added Zhang.

 

Female scientists are the founders of sci-tech civilization and the promoters of social progress. The world needs science, and science can not go without women’s engagement, continued Zhang.

 

Zhang advocated female scientists to uphold principles of science and technology for social good and gather innovative forces to support sustainable development.

 

Zhang urged to pool the strength of trust and promote openness and cooperation.

 

Zhang promised that CAST will, as always, support women's participation in sci-tech innovation, and enhance openness and cooperation with international sci-tech community.

 

We look forward to having women scientists in China, Japan and ROK confident in innovation and shining under spotlight of the stage of science in the future, concluded Zhang.

 

Luo Hui said that promoting the implementation of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development requires the joint efforts of the international community.

 

We should work together to introduce more policies and measures to promote women's participation in science and technology and help them grow into accomplished scientific talents. We should enhance women's influence in the sci-tech field, and jointly create a better future for them, added Luo.

 

Qiao Jie, vice president of CAST, member of the Standing Committee of the Party committee and executive vice president of Peking University, president of Peking University Third Hospital, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Keiko Torii, chairman of the jury of the "Jun Ashida Award", and principal researcher of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), and Kim Soyoung, director of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), director of the Korea Policy Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), gave presentations entitled "Practice and Rethink of Cultivating Women in Science", "Why Japan should promote the development of women in the STEM field and how to do it?" and "Research on the current situation of Korean female scientists" respectively.

At the panel session, Motoko Kotani, executive vice president for research of Tohoku University of Japan, and president-elect of the International Science Council (ISC) (2022-2024), Cao Xiaofeng, academician of TWAS, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and researcher of the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the CAS, Miyoko O. Watanabe, member of the Science Council of Janpan (SCJ) and senior researcher of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Lee Suk Kyeong, professor of the medical school of the Catholic University of Korea, and chairman of the women's life science and technology forum, Yang Ruikan, commissioner of UN women China, Han Xiqiu, member of the Executive Council of the World Federation of Scientific Workers (WFSW), vice president of Ocean College of Zhejiang University, and researcher of the Second Institute of Oceanography of Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), Sohn Soyoung, professor of the department of industrial engineering of Yonsei University, chairman of the committee of female scientists and member of KAST, Zhang Wei, assistant representative in China of the United Nations Development Program, and other guests exchanged views on topics of experience and practice of encouraging, training and supporting female scientific researchers and the role of women in science and technology in achieving the United Nations SDGs.

 

The participating experts provided practical cases and shared experiences on topics of setting examples of outstanding female scientists, improving the leadership of female scientists, rewarding outstanding young female scientists, providing young female scientists with opportunities for academic growth and scientific research programs, and sharing with scientific professional women the responsibility of taking care of families .

Guided by the consensus topic of "women and science" in the international community, the 2022 China Japan ROK Forum on Women in Science received support from relevant United Nations agencies, international organizations including the ISC and other scientific research institutions in China, Japan and ROK .

 

The forum was co-sponsored by CAST, the JST and KAST. It was jointly hosted by the China Center for International Science and Technology Exchange (CISTE), the Chinese Women Scientists Association, and the Korea-China Science & Technology Corporation Center. It was held in a combination of online and on spot.

 

More than 40 people attended the forum, including representatives of the winners of the previous China young female scientist awards, leaders of relevant departments of the Ministry of Education (MOE), the CAS and CAST, representatives of female science and technology leading talent of universities and scientific research institutes, and representatives of Japanese and Korean scientific research institutions in China.

 

The forum was livestreamed worldwide through cctv.com's multiple platforms both at home and abroad.

 

As of 17:00 on September 2, 2022, the total number of global viewers of the forum had reached 7.212 million.
