In the context that the Communist Party of China (CPC) is holding its

20th National Congress, two functioning science popularization bodies affiliated to the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), namely the implementation office of the Outline of the National Scheme for Scientific Literacy and the China Alliance for Scientific Literacy (CASL),rallied representatives of their member units to discuss how to implement the Opinions on Strengthening Science Popularization Work in the New Era (Hereinafter referred to as the “Opinions”) .

The Opinions is an important document jointly issued by the General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the General Office of the State Council in early September, 2022, embodying serial instructions of President Xi Jinping on promoting China’s science popularization cause and enhancing scientific literacy of Chinese citizens, demonstrating the cause in China has entered a new stage.

According to President Xi’s speech, the Opinions raised a fundamental principle, that is: science popularization is placed in the same important position as sci-tech innovation.

The two functioning bodies urged their member units to take shared responsibilities and make concerted efforts with all social sectors to popularize science, bringing forth a sound social environment in which sci-tech innovation plays a leading role in boosting science popularization, and in reverse science popularization promoting the commercialization and application of sci-tech innovation, highlighting new connotation and political attribute of science popularization in serving China’s innovation-driven development strategy.

“I hope all member units have more get-togethers to share experiences, and initiate intersected programs to reinforce the effect of each other’s actions in science popularization. We need foster a socialized mobilization mechanism and form a great synergy to open a new chapter of science popularization in China”, told Meng Qinghai to the reporter, “CAST is taking practical actions to welcome the convening of the 20th CPC National Congress and spare no efforts to building China into a modern socialist country in all respects”, added Meng.

Meng is full-time vice president and executive secretary of the Secretariat of CAST, he is also director of the implementation office of the Outline of the National Scheme for Scientific Literacy and executive vice president of the CASL.
