24-hour live broadcast showcasing high-profile local events, interviews and discussions on key engineering topics was launched for the first time to celebrate World Engineering Day 2022 (WED 2022) on March 4, 2022.

With the theme of "Build Back Wiser: Engineering the Future", the program hit 8 major countries of Australia, China, India, France, Ghana, the United Kingdom (UK), the United States (US) and Costa Rica, demonstrating how engineers across the globe are celebrating the Day and being recognized for their great work and the important role the engineering technology is playing in boosting economic recovery from COVID-19 pandemic as well.

With the live broadcast program, WED 2022 emphasized the irreplaceable role of engineers in building a sustainable future, and called for an open, innovative and responsible world being built through engineering technology.

As an important part of the WED 2022 celebration, the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) launched the Chinese program consisting of 3 sessions, namely “Concept: Message to the Future", "Vision: Foreseeing the Future" and "Application: Striding towards the Future" to narrate China’s new achievements, new international cooperation and new efforts for sustainable development in the fields of engineering technology.

Wan Gang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and president of CAST, Gong Ke, president of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), Huang Wei, president of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Yan Jinxiu, president of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA), attended the event and delivered online speeches respectively.

In his speech, Wan Gang extended his holiday greetings and high regards to worldwide engineers for their outstanding contributions to promoting sustainable development.

Wan pointed out that WED celebration is a good opportunity for us to unite the broad masses of engineers across the globe and give a better play to engineering technology for global sustainable development.

Wan expected the participants to work together to promote innovation of engineering technologies, enhance engineering competence and push up global opening-up and cooperation in engineering projects.

In the future, CAST looks forward to conducting in-depth cooperation with international engineering circles to exchange information and innovate mechanism to cultivate qualified engineering professionals and initiate international engineering organizations to fulfill global sustainable development goals, concluded Wan.

Gong Ke said in his speech that "Build Back Wiser" means to give full play to engineering technology in transformation and reconstruction and the engineering world should undertake ethnic responsibility with open attitude and strong capability.

Gong believed that China's large number of engineers will be an important strength for global sustainable development.

In his speech, Huang Wei pointed out that we are living in an era of sharing creation and sharing benefits. The combined impacts of the changes and the pandemic which both are unseen in a century cannot shake our faith of Engineering a Better Future. FEIAP is willing to work with engineers and sci-tech professionals from all over the world to make positive contributions to the realization of the bright future.

As a representative of international organizations and a representative of female engineers, Yan Jinxiu called for more women to participate in the field of engineering technology.

Yan hoped that ITA and WFEO would strengthen cooperation to promote the realization of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations (UN) and contribute engineering strength to solve global challenges and benefit mankind.

In “Concept: Message to the Future" session, Guo Huadong, academician of the CAS and chief scientist of science satellite for sustainable development, took the program of sustainable development of big data and satellite as an example to describe the latest achievements and showcase China's contribution to sustainable development through engineering technology.

Taking the program of Five-hundred-meter Apeture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) as an example, Jiang Peng, chief engineer of the program, demonstrated the achievements of China's independent innovation, the beauty of science and technology, and highlighted the new realm of China's science and technology opening to the world.

Cheng Mingming, professor of Nankai University, member of the Community of Information and Communication of WFEO and member of the Chinese committee, talked as a representative of young engineers about engineering promoting human progress in combination with his research work in visual recognition algorithm, showing the vision and courage of the new generation of Chinese engineers.

In “Application: Striding towards the Future” session, the invited experts showed vivid practice of engineering boosting sustainable development at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Zhang Xinrong, a professor at the school of engineering of Peking University and an expert in the CO2 transcritical refrigeration system of the National Speed Skating Oval, Jiang Liandong, chief engineer of the program of Winter Olympic torch of the No. 101 institute of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), and Li Xiaogang, a professor of the corrosion and protection center of the Institute for Advanced Materials and Technology of the University of Science and Technology Beijing, were invited to tell the story of green and high-tech Winter Olympics focusing on new engineering technologies used at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

The event invited well-known engineering experts and science popularization professionals to launch serial activities to celebrate WED 2022 on multiple media platforms.

The event used the Tiktok platform to weave a media platform network to find topics about engineers, and encouraged the general public to publish relevant content and get engaged in finding the beauty of engineering in daily life.

The general public can interact with preeminent engineers, academicians, experts, entrepreneurs, science writers and internet celebrities by participating in WED online programs launched at mainstream social media platforms of Today's Headlines (Jinritoutiao), Watermelon Videos (Xiguashipin), Xinlang micro-blog and WeChat.
