Science Popularization into Ten Thousand Families Action initiated in Beijing

On May 27, 2023, Shen Yueyue, vice chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and president of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), attended the initiative ceremony of the Action of Science Popularization into Ten Thousand Families.



Huang Xiaowei, secretary of the leading Party members group, vice president, and first secretary of the Secretariat of the ACWF, Meng Qinghai, full time vice president, executive secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Wang Jiayi, deputy minister of Education, Xing Bo, deputy director of the China Media Group (CMG) attended the event and delivered speeches respectively.


Lin Yi, vice chairwoman and secretary of the Secretariat of the ACWF attended the event.


The launch ceremony was jointly organized by the department of family and children's work of the ACWF, the department of off-campus education and training supervision of the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Department of Science Popularization of CAST, the China National Children's Center, the Children and Youth Science Center (CYSC) of CAST, the center of youth and sports of the CMG.


Through bringing science popularization curricular to families, the action aims  to study and practice the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Instruction of President Xi Jinping on family education, family tradition, and sci-tech innovation and carry out The Outline of the National Scheme for Scientific Literacy (2021-2035) and the Opinions of 18 departments including the Ministry of Education on strengthening science education in primary and secondary schools in the new era, to enhance the scientific literacy of Chinese citizens and advocate the ethos of science and the spirit of Chinese scientists.


At the launch ceremony, Wu Xiangping, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Wang Yaping, renowned taikonaut, delivered  lectures entitled "Understanding the universe" and "Exploring space with lofty aspirations" respectively.


Meng Qinghai said in his speech that President Xi Jinping's important instruction provides a fundamental basis to carry out specifically tailored science popularization activities in families.


Meng noted that as China’s largest science and technology organization and the leading unit of The Outline of the National Scheme for Scientific Literacy, CAST has been committing to enhancing the scientific literacy of all Chinese citizens. Joining hands with relevant state organs, federations and media groups, CAST has initiated various brand programs for women and children, which are 2 of the all 5 targeted groups for China’s science popularization cause. The other groups include farmer, senior people and civil servant.


Meng added that CAST will narrate vivid stories happened in China’s modernization drive from the association’s unique perspective while it endeavors to fulfilling its founding mission to better communicate science. And CAST will take the initiative of the action as a new start to build itself into a hub for cultivating talent and sharing resources.


Meng raised 3 requirements as follows:


--Promote cooperation among different sectors to mobilize grassroots organizations to engage in science popularization. Mobilize Chinese sci-tech professionals to develop family-oriented science education programs and make relevant resources accessible in broader regions.


--Enlarge the supply of high-quality science popularization resources under the framework of CAST’s brand program of China Science Communication. Get more Chinese sci-tech professionals engaged to develop more family-specific science education curricular.


--Make full use of various science popularization platforms, establish the modern science and technology museum system, national science popularization education bases and research bases to provide services for carrying out science education activities within families.


The Science Popularization into Ten Thousand Families Action is jointly organized by the ACWF, the MoE, CAST, and the CMG.


The action is expected to develop a network to gather expert resources to provide professional advice, develop target specific curricular and activities, and coordinate families and schools to pay concerted efforts to make the whole society accept and cherish great morals of communicating science and respecting science.
