CAST holds forum on development and governance of S/T societies

The 6th World Forum on Development and Governance for Science and Technology Societies was held in Xiamen On November 7, 2023.



Under the theme of "Collaborate to Build a New Ecosystem of Innovation and Development", the forum was co-sponsored by CAST and the People's Government of Fujian Province.


Meng Qinghai, full-time vice president and executive secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and Lin Ruiliang, deputy governor of Fujian Province, attended the forum and delivered speeches respectively.


The keynote speech session was presided over by Shu Yinbiao, president of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering (CSEE) and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).


At the forum, Guo Huadong, honorary president of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Bob Cryan, president of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Fawu Wang, president of the International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ICGdR) and foreign academician of the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ), and Alison Rabett, vice president from Wiley Publishing Group delivered keynote speeches respectively on topics including promoting sustainable development, building an international science and technology innovation ecosystem, empowering STM journals, and the development of sci-tech societies.


During the forum, 3 parallel sessions and 1 youth leadership salon were held, along with the Annual Meeting of Xiamen Association for Science and Technology.


Heads from more than 30 sci-tech societies and associations including the IET, the Institute of Physics of the UK, Korea-China Science &Technology Corporation Center, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), Macau Institute of Engineers, and the China Society of Automotive Engineer engaged in dialogues around new changes driven by open cooperation, digitization of sci-tech societies, development of high-quality journals, and youth leadership.


The forum issued the Global Sci-tech Societies Development Blue Book, which reviews the development process, disciplinary layout, management mechanisms and best practices of global sci-tech societies.


Helen Pain, CEO of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Lin Zhongqin, president of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES) and academician of the CAE, Weng Mengyong, president of the China Highway & Transportation Society, and others contributed articles to the Blue Book, looking forward to the bright future of the sci-tech societies and innovation.
