The 2023 Tengchong Scientists Forum took place in Tengchong, Southwest China's Yunnan province, from Dec 1 to 3, and is aimed at pooling scientific and technological ideas to drive innovation, building an exchange platform to deepen scientific cooperation, contributing scientific strength to counter challenges, and carrying forward the spirit of science to promote impartiality in innovation.

The Forum is co-sponsored by the provincial government of Yunnan and the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST).

Global change can affect the movement of wild animals, and thus incur a series of ecological and sociological issues. Factors that disrupt natural animal movement could lead to a species’ extinction in their natural habitat, and abnormal animal movement could exacerbate conflicts between humans and animals or damage indigenous ecosystems.

Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the management of animal movement in the face of global change, in a bid to minimize human-animal conflict, protect endangered species, and reduce animal-caused damage to humans or ecosystems.

During the Forum, the International Society of Zoological Sciences (ISZC), together with its partners, held an International Symposium on Animal Movement and Ecological Protection under Global Change (AMEP symposium) on Dec 2.

The Symposium focused on identifying the driving forces and consequences of the movement of animals faced with global change, and proposing countermeasures for the protection of endangered species, control of invasive species and zoonotic diseases.
